Adopting a dog and taking one into your home is an exciting experience. It gives you the chance to care for another living creature. It also helps decrease your anxiety, stress, and depression. In some cases, however, raising a dog may come with an element of surprise, particularly when it comes to breeds. Since it’s hard to say if a puppy belongs to a certain breed, you’ll have to wait until its fully grown to see if its appearance, traits, and temperament match the expected breed.
With that, here are 40 seriously cute dogs that turned out to be different that what their humans expected.
1. A poodle
This dog looks like it’s laughing so hard. Well, who wouldn’t? His human got him as a birthday present thinking he was a poodle. Now they git to put up with the fact that he’s a funny Border Collie mix.
2. A medium sized dog
The family got this dog hoping that it’ll be a medium sized dog. A couple of months after, he’s already over that size. It’s now as big as a mini pony.
3. A Poodle
They were told that this adorable dog was a Poodle. Looking into those eyes, I don’t think his breed matters.
4. A hound mix
There’s nothing about this dog that suggests it’s a Hound Mix. Considering its size, it’s clearly a Great Dane mix.
5. German Shepherd
I bet this human had the surprise of his life when his German Shepherd stopped growing in height. Nonetheless, those short legs don’t make this dog less majestic.
6. A Cocker Spaniel
I never thought Cocker Spaniels could get this big. Well, not unless this one’s a big Lab (which it is!).
7. A Pit Bull
This human was told he was getting a Pit Bull and I guess the information was correct. He just probably missed the Corgi part.
8. Not sure
This dog’s human isn’t sure if his dog is a Maltese or Terrier mix. Regardless, the dog is still amazing for him.
9. A Boxer mix
The people from the shelter said this dog was a Boxer mix. After doing a Wisdom Panel, these humans found that doubtful. He’s actually 50% American Staffordshire Terrier, 12.5% Australian Shepherd, 12.5% Australian Cattle Dog, 12.5% Mastiff and 12.5% other breeds.
10. A Street Dog
They didn’t lie. This dog used to be a small street dog during adoption. He just happened to grow into a big Greyhound.
11. A Shih Tzu
She’s fluffy. It doesn’t matter if she’s a Shih Tzu or an actual Poodle Jack Russel Mix.
12. A pure bred chihuahua
It looks like someone’s not good with math. 1/2 Chihuahua and 1/2 Yorkshire Terrier doesn’t make 1 pure bred Chihuahua.
13. Full Blooded Dachshund
The dog looks more like a Mini Dachshund or a Chiweenie. I’m having a hard time deciding. That tail is surely distracting.
14. A Yorkshire
They were told they’d be getting a Yorkshire. I think they got more than they wanted. That face is surely one of the most adorable dog faces I’ve seen.
15. A small dog
This human thought she was taking a small dog into her apartment. After 20 lbs, she realized she got more than an apartment dog.
16. Mini Pinscher x Jack Russel Terrier
Weighing 11kg, this dog is a bit big for a Mini Pinscher or a Jack Russel Terrier. Even though he turned out to be a bit different, I don’t think there’s any reason to feel regretful. He’s clearly a bundle of joy. Just look at that smile!
17. Shih Tzu x Poodle mix
His owners weren’t convinced that this pup is a Shih Tzu x Poodle mix. Out of curiosity, they did a DNA test and found that their dog was chihuahua, yorkie, shih tzu, and other breeds they couldn’t tell.
18. A labrador
The longer you look at this dog, the less she looks like a lab. Those short legs make her look like a mini Dachshund.
19. A Golden Retriever
Something tells me this dog isn’t a pure bred Golden Retriever. With the way it’s smiling, it looks more like a half Chihuahua and half vampire.
20. Purebred Jack Russell
This dog’s DNA test result is quite funny. Jack Russell came at the 7th spot, just next to Great Dane.
21. A part Chihuahua
They were honest when they said that the dog was part Chihuahua. They just weren’t clear what the other parts were.
22. Rottweiler mix
Even the dog looked doubtful. With that kind of coat, he looks more like a Wheaten Terrier.
23. Chiweenie
This human was happy to get a Chiweenie dog. Unfortunately, she wasn’t told that the dog would also have a bit of Greyhound genes.
24. Half Poodle
No joke. This dog’s DNA confirmed that it’s actually a half Poodle. With that size, who would have thought?
25. A Teacup Chihuahua
Whoever thought this was a Teacup Chihuahua probably have huge teacups at home. This dog is seriously big to be one!
26. Lab Mix
Adopted as a lab mix, this dog grew into a Rotweiller/Boxer mix. The breed and even the weight didn’t matter to this human.
27. Purebred Applehead Chihuahua
This dog’s father looked like a Chihuahua but his mom looked like a mix of something. Lesson? When someone says a dog is purebred, try to see the parents first.
28. Pit Bull x Great Pyrenees mix
His owner agrees that the dog looks more like a Whippet. It’s probably because of the legs and the fine coat.
29. A Cavoodle
A Cavoodle tends to retain its puppy-like appearance. If that’s the only criterion, this dog passes as one.
30. Pitt x Doberman x Chow x Samoyed x Husky mix
There are too many breeds on the list. Let’s just say that this dog is one of a kind, shall we?
31. A Husky
No matter which angle you look at, you’d have a hard time finding the “Husky” in this dog. The color and coat don’t match the breed.
32. German Shepherd
The color might pass for a GSD. That kind of coat, however, looks more like a Golden Retriever’s coat.
33. Purebred Cocker Spaniel
There’s no way that this dog is a purebred Cocker Spaniel. Just look at its size! It looks more like a mix with a Golden Retriever.
34. Pit/American Bulldog mix
His human was told he’d be getting a Pit/American Bulldog mix. However, his mind says this dog’s dad look more like a Basset dog.
35. Chihuahua
It’s either this human got the wrong dog or she overfed her pet. That’s a bit big and bulky for a Chihuahua.
36. A Beagle mix
She was supposed to be a Beagle mix. The only problem? Her owner hasn’t seen a Beagle mix that weighs 70 lbs yet.
37. Rottweiler x German Shepherd
Believe it or not, this dog’s largest percentage is actually Chow Chow. The rest of her mix includes Doberman, Golden Retriever, Shepherd, Rottweiler, and Jack Russell Terrier.
38. A Boxer
Boxers are solidly built and large dogs. Considering those words, I guess this one’s far from belonging to that breed.
39. Those ears
This human believed that he was going to get a dog. In the end, he ended up with a dog with a rat’s ears.
40. Half Chihuahua
This is one patient human. Imagine, after 6 years, he’s still waiting for this dog’s Chihuahua side to come out.
